We aim to collect only what is needed to operate the service, provide requested results and support your account.

  • We do not sell personal information.
  • Payment credentials are handled by our payment provider.
  • Family information is used to produce the result you request.
  • You can ask us to access, correct or delete account information.

1. Scope

This notice applies to the What You Inherit website, family-history tool, account services and related communications. It should be read together with our Terms of service.

What You Inherit is intended for personal education and does not provide healthcare or genetic testing. Please avoid entering information that is not needed for your estimate, including names or other direct identifiers for relatives.

3. How information is used

We use information to provide and maintain the service; generate the family tree and requested estimate; authenticate users; administer paid access; respond to support, privacy and billing requests; detect misuse; measure reliability; and meet legal obligations.

If you use the conversational input, the text you submit and relevant context may be processed to translate your description into structured family information. Do not include names, addresses, identification numbers or other details that are not needed for that purpose.

We do not use the family information you enter to make decisions about employment, insurance, credit or access to healthcare.

4. When information is shared

We disclose information only where reasonably necessary to provide the service, protect users and the service, complete a transaction, comply with law or respond to a valid legal request.

  • Service providers. Selected providers may process information for hosting, account access, payment, email delivery, analytics, customer support or language processing under appropriate contractual arrangements.
  • Legal and safety reasons. We may preserve or disclose information where required by law or where reasonably necessary to protect rights, safety and service integrity.
  • Business changes. Information may be transferred as part of a reorganisation, financing, acquisition or sale, subject to applicable law and appropriate safeguards.

Information may be processed in countries other than the one where you live. Where required, we use recognised safeguards for international transfers.

5. Retention and security

We keep information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described here, including providing access, maintaining transaction and support records, resolving disputes, preventing abuse and meeting legal obligations. Retention periods vary by category and context.

We use administrative, organisational and technical safeguards designed to protect information against unauthorised access, loss, misuse or alteration. No online service can guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for protecting your sign-in details and for using a device and network you trust.

6. Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of or a copy of personal information, or to object to or restrict certain processing. You may also have the right to complain to a local data protection authority.

You can limit what you provide by omitting names and other direct identifiers from family descriptions. Browser controls may also allow you to limit cookies or similar storage, although parts of the service may then work differently.

We may need to verify your identity before completing a request. Some information may be retained where required by law or needed to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.

7. Changes to this notice

We may update this notice to reflect changes to the service, our practices or applicable requirements. The date at the top shows when it was last revised. If a change materially affects how we handle personal information, we will take reasonable steps to provide additional notice.
